The Merion Concert Band seeks a conductor/music director to program and lead a large symphonic wind band.
MCB is a large group of amateur musicians rooted in the Lower Merion community. Founded as the Merion Musical Society in 1977, it quickly evolved into the Merion Concert Band. The band has a membership of over 80 adult musicians volunteering their time once each week during the season to enjoy making music. Members come from all walks of life as well as many different levels of musical accomplishment. The band rehearses weekly from September through June presenting three formal concerts each season as well as a number of lighter performances during the summer.
While the band has an extensive library in excess of 1150 compositions, much if its focus over the last few years has been to present a number of modern works by contemporary composers as well as many of the classics of the traditional band repertoire.
Band governance is shared by the elected officers and the board of directors handling the administrative details of securing rehearsal space, booking concert venues and the subsequent details of running the organization.
Several people conducted the band during its early years. Three people have provided leadership since 1981, with the current leader in place since early 2010. Nathan Snyder, the current conductor is relocating to the mid-west generating the need to fill the role.
Under Mr. Snyder’s leadership, the band has grown in both size and musical ability, and now presents increasingly interesting and difficult compositions each season. It is the goal of the band to continue to expand the capabilities of its musicians by recruiting a person equally committed to the band and these goals.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to fostering and encouraging the community band. The conductor/music director must be willing dedicate the time and effort to select appropriate music and efficiently allocate rehearsal time to adequately prepare the band for its performances. We seek candidates that have prior conducting experience and educational preparation to handle the responsibilities of this volunteer position.
Interested candidates should e-mail a resume or summary of credentials relative to this position to Paul Csigi, Chairman, Conductor Search Committee at Paul.Csigi@merionconcertband.org.
